Hoof care

Hoofs should be picked out every day to remove manure from around the frog and to check for rocks or other foreign objects. Pick hoofs toward the toe, using extra care in the heel area.

The cleft of the frog may be infected with thrush, which can be recognized by its offensive odor and characteristic dark discharge. Use care with your hoof pick when cleaning a deep frog cleft where thrush may be present, since it can cause the foot to be sensitive. Thrush is usually caused by a wet and dirty stall. Since preventing thrush is better than any treatment, keep the stall as clean and dry as possible.

Whether or not your horse wears shoes, your farrier should tend to your horse's feet every 4 to 8 weeks. Keeping hoofs properly trimmed and balanced reduces leg strain and helps prevent a variety of hoof and leg problems.

Use a good hoof dressing daily around the coronet band, hoof wall, sole, and frog. This helps maintain proper moisture balance and encourages healthy growth. Remember, cracking can occur with hoofs that are too wet as well as too dry. The fungus and bacteria that thrive in a wet environment can weaken healthy hoofs.

Lanolin maintains a healthy, natural moisture balance and, at the same time, provides a good moisture barrier when excessive water is present.
