Care for coats

A healthy, bright, and shiny coat of hair is the result of proper nutrition, exercise, and grooming. Good grooming habits include daily brushing and periodic use of the right shampoo. Use a mild shampoo which has been formulated for horses instead of a product intended for household use, one that will clean without stripping essential oils.

Avoid shampoos that replace natural oils with silicone oils, since these attract dirt and grime. Residues or films dull the coat, so use a product that rinses clean. Avoid fragrances – they tend to attract insects.

wash
  • Wet the entire horse. Be careful not to use extremely cold water. Sponge, rather than hose, the ears and face.

  • Apply shampoo according to the directions.

  • Scrub the horse using a rubber mitt or curry comb. Pay particular attention to areas which accumulate dandruff or trap dirt, such as the mane, withers, tail and between front and hind legs. Don’t overlook the sheath or udder, which also need special care. Be cautious when cleaning around the hind-quarters and sensitive spots.

  • Rinse completely, again avoiding very cold water.

  • Thoroughly scrape off excess water.
